Mickey Goldmill was Rocky Balboa's trainer/manager and best friend throughout the Rocky movie series. The character, played by Oscar nominated actor Burgess Meredith, dies in Rocky III but is seen in flashbacks in the later films.

Sylvester Stallone, who starred as Rocky and created Mickey, based the character on real life bantamweight fighter Charley Goldman because both were similar in stature and had Jewish heritages.

In Rocky III, the plaque on Goldmill's tomb says he was born in 1905 and died in 1981, making him 76 in the Rocky universe. Goldmill fought from 1922 to 1947, and never gained much fame.

The character, however, was known for his burning wise cracks and devilish sense of humor. Some of his lines included "Women weaken legs" and "Your nose is broken... it's an improvement."

Mickey's last words to Rocky were, "I love you, Kid."

Meredith was active in Hollywood for more than 60 years as an actor, writer, producer and director. He was considered one of the most accomplished actors of the 20th Century by his peers.

Meredith, who died in 1997, was nominated for two Academy Awards, including the role of Mickey Goldmill. He also won several Emmy Awards for his television. Despite his astounding career in film and on stage, Meredith may forever be remembered for portraying super villain, The Penguin, in the original Batman television series in the 1960s.
