In the classic tale of Robin Hood, Maid Marian's last name is Fitzwalter. She is the daughter of Robert Fitzwalter, the Earl of Fitzwalter, and cousin to King Richard I.

Arguably the most famous portrayal of Marian was by Olivia de Havilland in the 1938 film "The Adventures of Robin Hood" with Errol Flynn in the title role. Olivia de Havilland is pictured above.

Although Fitzwalter is the accepted last name, the tale has been told so many times that liberties have been taken.

In the 1993 Kevin Costner epic "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves." Marian's last name is Dubois, a reference to the French name of Robin Hood, Robin des Bois. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio portrayed Marian in the film.

She is also known as Marian of Leaford in "Robin of Sherwood."

In literature, Marian is tomboyish, and likes to hunt. In the movies, she has been portrayed as a woman of high social status and does not get involved in things that will get her hands dirty, such as in de Havilland's portrayal.

In many stories, Marian marries Robin Hood.

The Robin Hood tale from English folklore dates back to the 15th Century.
