In the TV show "Cheers", what was the name of the wooden Indian in the front of the bar?
Tecumseh, whose Shawnee name means, “Panther across the Sky”, was born in March 1768 near what is now Springfield, Ohio. He was adopted by the Shawnee chief Blackfish and during the American Revolution participated in combined British and Indian attacks on patriots.
In September 1792, Tecumseh was chosen leader of a band of Shawnees, Delaware, and Potawatomi tribes, which became known as Tecumseh's Confederacy. They then fought small actions in the South, and made an alliance with the Creeks.
In the War of 1812, Tecumseh again fought on the British side and led perhaps the most formidable force ever commanded by a North American Indian, an accomplishment that was a decisive factor in the capture of Detroit and of 2,500 U.S. soldiers.
On October 5, 1813, the British and the Confederation fought the Battle of the Thames and were routed. Tecumseh was killed and his body was carried from the field and buried secretly in a grave that has never been discovered.
In the "Cheers episode "Bar Wars III: The Return of Tecumseh", the statue nicknamed Tecumseh standing at the entrance of the bar, is missing, and the gang think that it's Gary of Gary's Olde Towne Tavern who stole it. After Sam, Norm and Cliff close down Gary's bar with padlocks, toxic warning signs and police tape, they find out that Rebecca sent Tecumseh out solely to be varnished.
It was never revealed, in the show, where Sam Malone acquired the Tecumseh statue.
