Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (1881-1975) is regarded as one of the great comic writers of the 20th century. He is perhaps most famous for the creation of the bumbling aristocrat Bertie Wooster and his suave valet (who is at pains to point out that he is not a butler, though he can "buttle" when necessary!) Jeeves, but perhaps the large pet pig of the Blandings family runs them a close second.

This fictional porker belongs to a real-life breed - she is a black Berkshire sow, and an institution at her home of Blandings castle. She appears in many books, some titles leaning towards the meteorlogical, such as "Summer Lightning", "Heavy Weather" and "Sunset at Blandings". In the course of her long and eventful life she has a succession of keepers, some with wonderfully comic names like George Cyril Wellbeloved and Gregory Parsloe-Parsloe. Her adventures include being abducted, spending a while living in a caravan, and ending up with a hangover.

In some of the books there is also a rival pig, rejoicing in the name of The Pride of Matchingham.
