In the 1998 film, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Johnny Depp portrays Raoul Duke. Duke is a fictional character and anti-hero based on Hunter S. Thompson in his autobiographical novel: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The movie's screenplay is done by Terry Gilliam; he is also the person who directs the film.

Here Johnny Depp studied revolutionary journalist Hunter S. Thompson so thoroughly that it seemed that he practically transformed into the author's famous analogue Raoul Duke. Terry Gilliam's adaptation of Thompson's indictment, or possibly just drug addled satire of excess, denial, ignorance, and even more excess is shown in this instance as one great cinematic acid trip. And there's absolutely no one other than Raoul Duke who can show us the true ups and downs of using acid. Then having a nearly tragic hairline, Johnny Depp gives us one of his finest, most unforgettable performances as Raoul Duke.

Finally, this whole movie is summed up in the one line by Duke where he says: "We can't stop here! This is bat country!!" Initially, we are told that the main characters had an assigned journey with a journalistic purpose. The journey turns out however to be an exploration of Las Vegas setting under the effect of psychoactive substances.
