In what two cultures is a good burp after a meal acceptable?
We are used to taking burping as something inappropriate and gross. But some cultures, notably Chinese and Indian, regard burping as acceptable in certain situations. In China and India burping is often considered a sign of satiety and satisfaction with the meal, and guests may just thank the host in such a natural way. In Japan, burping during a meal is also considered bad manners. In Middle Eastern countries it is not acceptable to burp out loud, and one should silence one's burp, or at least pretend to do so.
