In what year was the Kingdom of Great Britain established?
While maintaining separate parliaments, England and Scotland were ruled under one crown beginning in 1603, when James VI of Scotland succeeded his cousin Elizabeth I as James I of England. In the ensuing 100 years, strong religious and political differences divided the kingdoms. Finally, in 1707, England and Scotland were unified as Great Britain, sharing a single Parliament at Westminster.
Great Britain, also referred to as the Kingdom of Great Britain, was a monarchy established by the Act of Union on May 1, 1707 that politically united the kingdoms of England and Scotland.

David MacGregor, that was a major bone of contention around Elizabeth II’s coronation as the Scots correctly pointed out that she was their Elizabeth I!
It was agreed that, going forth, regnal numbers will reflect all preceding English and Scottish monarchs. For instance, the next (hypothetical) King James of the United Kingdom will be called King James VIII because Scotland has already had seven sovereigns called King James, even if England and Wales have only had two. The same logic was used to settle on Queen Elizabeth II.

Wales is part of Great Britain, yes. Wales was conquered by England in the late 13th century so was already ‘united’ with England, governed by the same crown and parliament. When King James VI of Scotland became ruler of England (and Wales) in 1603 he united the crowns of Scotland and England, sowing the seeds of a political union which he championed all his life. It wasn’t until the 1707 union of the Scottish and English parliaments, however, that the nation of ‘Great Britain’ was formally created.
Northern Ireland is not, and has never been, part of Great Britain. The United Kingdom of Great Britain & Ireland (abbreviated to the United Kingdom or UK) was established in 1801 when Ireland’s parliament was merged with Britain’s...which didn’t go down very well in Ireland. The Irish Free State - now called the Republic of Ireland - seceded from the UK in 1922, but Northern Ireland remained. The United Kingdom / UK now means ‘The United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland’.
