In which African country can you share a hotel with giraffes?
Modeled on a Scottish hunting lodge, and built in 1932, the Giraffe Manor is located outside Nairobi, Kenya. It is a small (12 bedroom) hotel which not only serves as vacation lodging, but is also home to a number of endangered Rothschild's giraffes.
A stay at the the small, private hotel is one visitors don’t soon forget. Guests are able to feed the giraffes from their breakfast table, through the front door, and out of their 2nd story bedroom windows. The animals are encouraged to poke their long necks inside, where willing guests serve them “treats” of dried grass pellets, and marvel at their 18” long blue tongues.
The hotel grounds double as a 140-acre sanctuary for Rothschild giraffes as part of the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife. The associated Giraffe Center operates a breeding program to reintroduce breeding pairs back into the wild to secure the future of the subspecies.
The Rothschild giraffe is a subspecies of giraffe that is classified as endangered. Experts estimate there are fewer than 2,500 remaining Rothschild giraffes in the wild.
