In which British city were Marie biscuits first made?
The Marie biscuit was created by the London bakery Peek Freans in 1874. It was to commemorate the marriage of the Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia to Prince Alfred the Duke of Edinburgh, the second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The original biscuits were called María biscuits.
A Marie biscuit is also known as Mariebon or Marietta amongst other names. The biscuit is round and usually has the name embossed upon its top surface, the edges of which are also embossed with an intricate design. It is made with wheat flour, sugar, palm oil or sunflower seed oil and, unlike the plain rich tea biscuit, is typically vanilla-flavoured.
It became popular throughout Europe, particularly in Spain where, following the Civil War, the biscuit became a symbol of the country's economic recovery after bakeries produced mass quantities to consume a surplus of wheat.
There are many major international producers. They are produced by Crawford's and McVitie's in the UK. In the US they are called Marias and are produced by Goya Foods and in Canada they are called Maria and are produced by President's Choice.
