U. C. (Unione Calcio) Sampdoria, commonly referred to as Sampdoria is an Italian professional football (soccer) club based in Genoa. The club formed in 1946 when former club Andrea Doria merged with Sampierdarenese. Sampdoria is nicknamed 'blucerchiati' (blue-circled) after the design of their home kit, which is blue with white, red and black bands across the centre of the shirt.

Sampdoria plays at Stadio Luigi Ferraris, which is named after Luigi Ferraris, an Italian footballer and soldier who died during WWI. It shares the stadium with the rival club, Genoa Cricket and Football Club (C.F.C.).

In 1991, Sampdoria won the Scudetto (little shield) for coming top in the Serie A league. In 1992, they reached the European Cup final, although lost to Barcelona.

Genoa is situated on the north east coast of Italy and is the 6th largest city in the country. The city hosted the FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) World Cup in 1934 and 1990.
