This sculpture, made of marble, depicts Mary and the Child Jesus and is called "Madonna and Child" or sometimes "The Madonna of Bruges". Michelangelo was working on this masterpiece from 1501 to 1504.

By creating this the artist showed an entirely new vision of the subject. Other artists usually depicted Maddona smiling down on an infant held in her arms, and in Michelangelo's variant Jesus is standing almost without any support. Mary is gazing away and don't even look at her son. During the artist's lifetime, the sculpture had to leave Italy, as it was bought by Alessandro Moscheroni, a wealthy man from Bruges. The sculpture was the only one of Michelangelo's works to travel to another country when he was alive.
