In which country are ‘The Mobile Phone Throwing World Championships’ held annually?
The Mobile Phone Throwing World Championships is an event arranged every year since the inaugural competition was held in late August 2000 in Savonlinna, Finland. It is an annual event still hosted in Savonlinna, a town and a municipality of 33,580 inhabitants in the southeast of Finland, in the heart of the Saimaa lake region.
A leading insurance company in Finland sponsored the first event for recycling purposes as many cell phones lye in thousands of lakes all around Finland. Many phones are returned to their mobile carrier stores in return for a new one; however, others are thrown away instead of being recycled and they become a toxic waste.
The international interest in the Championships led to official national championships all over Europe - in Trondheim, Norway in June 2004, in June 2005 in Northern Germany and in many more European countries, then in the U.S., in Massachusetts, in 2008.
It's a sport in which participants throw mobile phones and are judged on distance or technique in competitions for men and women, one for teams, and one for juniors with clear rules and official jury supervision.
The world record holder is Dries Feremans of Belgium with an official Guinness world record throw of 110.42metres (362.27ft.) (“Guinness Book of World Records 2019” page 110) set in Kessel-Lo in Belgium in August 2014. The best ever throw by a woman (as at 2019) was 67.58 metres (221.72 ft) set by Ivonne Wiener of Austria, in Vienna in September 2017.
