The city of Indianapolis, is the 15th most populous city in the U.S., the third most populous city in the Midwest, after Chicago, Illinois and Columbus Ohio, and the fourth-most populous state capital after Phoenix, Arizona; Austin Texas and Columbus. Indigenous peoples inhabited the area dating to as early as 10,000 BC. In 1818 the Delaware (Indigenous people) relinquished their tribal lands in the Treaty of St. Mary's. In 182l, Indianapolis was founded as a planned city for the new government. The city was platted (mapped) by Alexander Ralston (1771-1/5/1827) and Elias Fordham (1788-1850), (the original surveyor of Indianapolis), on a 1-square-mile (2.6 kmx2) grid next to the White River.

The city is best known for hosting the Indianapolis Colts (gridiron, played at Lucas Stadium, capacity of 70,000) and hosting the Indianapolis 500 race (capacity, 400,000).

One of the most acclaimed twenty century writers, Kurt Vonnegut, became known for including at least one character from Indianapolis in his novels.
