Etihad Airways is the national airline of the United Arab Emirates and one of the country's two flag carriers (the other being Emirates). Its headquarters is in Khalifa City, Abu Dhabi, near Abu Dhabi International Airport. Etihad commenced operations in November 2003. It is the second-largest airline in the UAE after Emirates. The name Etihad is Arabic for "Union".

The airline was established by Royal (Emiri) Decree in July 2003 and is wholly owned by the Government of Abu Dhabi, with a mandate to operate safely, commercially and profitably.

Operating a fleet of narrow and wide-body Airbus and Boeing aircraft, Etihad provides a rapidly expanding network of services within the Middle East and to Africa, Europe, Asia, North America and Australia. In addition to its core activity of passenger transportation, it earns significant revenue from its cargo operation, Etihad Crystal Cargo. Etihad Airways forms part of the Etihad Aviation Group.

Also, Etihad support a range of sporting and cultural events in the United Arab Emirates and worldwide. Its major sponsorships include Etihad Stadium, Ferrari Formula 1 Team, F1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Sport Australia Hall of Fame and Manchester City Football Club.

It has received a variety of awards such as: "World's Leading Airline" at the World Travel Awards in 2010, "World's Leading Airline" at the London World Travel Awards in 2009 and 2010, among others.
