Nobody knows where football was actually invented, as it probably existed all over the world thousands of years ago....kicking things around is a natural thing to do. But England is where the game was first organised with rules of the game being put together, which is what the question should have asked.

Kath Thomson, No - we in the UK call it Football. The sport is governed by The FA (The Football Association), not the Soccer Association. It's the US that call it Soccer - we have become accustomed in recent years to mentioning it as "soccer" when speaking with people from the US or other countries that call it soccer but otherwise we refer to it as football!!

Kath Thomson, No, the term Soccer (from the 'soc' in Association Football) was originated in England by a student at Oxford, and caught on, but then fell out of favor. America stuck with the term soccer, as did Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Many refer to 'soccer' as an American term, but it isn't.

You should try and find out what is the famous "calcio", a sport that Italians say was played in the Roman Empire, and allegedly was introduced in Britain, whence footballo derived. The Italians insist on calling the sport "calcio" and not football or soccer. SDtubborns wops!

Lorraine Bonner, Soccer is short for "AsSOCiation Football." Americans did not invent the term. The term "soccer" distinguishes the game from other games in which a ball is kicked.
