The name of this hardy plant gives no indication of it's geographical location -'Calycolpus australis' is in fact a plant species native to the State of Minas Gerais in Brazil, South America.

It can be found on poor, rocky soil that supports grasses but few shrubs or trees.

'Calycolpus australis' is a shrub up to 2 m high. Leaves are ovate to lanceolate (of a narrow oval shape tapering to a point at each end), thick and leathery, up to 53 mm long. The flowers are about 3–4 cm across. The fruits are spherical, about 1 cm in diameter, purple and hairy.

The leaves of 'Calycolpus australis' contain volatile oils (VO), which like other volatile oils are extracted from plants to produce essential oils, and are some of the most important medicinally active plant constituents. They are also widely used in aromatherapy (often called aromatics) as they are usually responsible for the distinctive odour of a plant.
