Horatio Nelson was born on 29 September 1758 in the county of Norfolk, England into a moderately prosperous family. Nelson learned to sail on the Norfolk Broads. He was a pupil at the Norwich School next to the Cathedral and there is a statue of this great local naval leader in the Cathedral Close. He joined the navy through the influence of his uncle, Maurice Suckling. Nelson was the sixth of eleven children of the Reverend Edmund Nelson and his wife Catherine Suckling. He was named after his godfather Horatio Walpole (1723–1809) then 2nd Baron Walpole of Wolterton.

Nelson lost the sight of his right eye during the campaign in Corsica in 1793 and later his right arm was amputated in the unsuccessful attempt to conquer Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Nelson's death at Trafalgar secured his position as one of Britain's most heroic figures.
