In which film does a Juilliard student break a blues guitarist out of jail and travel with him to Mississippi?

"Crossroads", a 1986 American coming-of-age musical drama, is a film inspired by the legend of blues musician Robert Johnson. Starring Ralph Macchio, Joe Seneca and Jami Gertz, this film was written by John Fusco and directed by Walter Hill. It was produced by Mark Carliner and features an original score featuring Ry Cooder and guitar virtuoso Steve Vai. The harmonica on the soundtrack is played by Sonny Terry. Steve Vai also appears in the film as the devil's guitar player in the climactic guitar duel.

Once a traveling blues musician prior to attending New York University Tisch School of the Arts, Fusco (b. January 2000) wrote "Crossroads" as part of an assignment in a master class led by the screenwriting giants Waldo Salt and Ring Lardner Jr. The university student's screenplay won first place in the national FOCUS Awards (Films of College and University Students). The script was sold to Columbia Pictures while Fusco was still a student. Key elements in Fusco's screenplay concern Eugene Martone, a student and Willie Brown, a musician, who is incarcerated for murder or attempted murder in a minimum security facility. The two will end up travelling from Memphis, Tennessee to the state of Mississippi.
