Orson Welles (May 6, 1915 – October 10, 1985) American actor, director, writer and producer who is remembered for his innovative work in radio, theatre and film, played the part of “Le Chiffre” in the James Bond film “Casino Royale” (1967).

“Le Chiffre” ("The Cypher" or "The Number") is a fictional character and the main antagonist of Ian Fleming's 1953 James Bond novel, “Casino Royale”. “Le Chiffre” is the “SMERSH” (a portmanteau of two Russian words: "SMERt' SHpionam", meaning "Death to Spies") financial agent, desperate to win at baccarat to repay the money he has embezzled from the organisation.

On screen “Le Chiffre” had been portrayed previously by Peter Lorre in the 1954 television adaptation of the novel for CBS's Climax!television series and by Mads Mikkelsen in the 2006 film version of “Casino Royale” in the Eon series of the Bond movies produced by Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman.
