In which movie does Al Pacino scream "Attica! Attica!"?
"Dog Day Afternoon" is a 1975 U.S. crime drama film directed by Sidney Lumet. It was written by Frank Pierson and produced by Martin Bregman and Martin Elfand. This film stars Al Pacino, John Cazale, Charles Durning, and Chris Sarandon. In the film, Sonny Wortzik (Al Pacino) is a bank robber. He is talking with Eugene Moretti (Charles Durning), a police sergeant who originally wants to negotiate with Sonny. The dialogue that Sonny is having with Moretti culminates between them when Sonny starts shouting "Attica! Attica!".
Sonny, who is holding eight bank employees hostage, starts the chant, "Attica! Attica!", at the massed police element outside the bank. He is using the chant to evoke the idea of the excessive police force used in response to the Attica Prison uprising. He hopes that the chant "Attica! Attica!" will cause the police to limit any type of harsh action before it is taken.
With the bank robbery in Brooklyn, NY, things however quickly go wrong. It results in a hostage situation. As Sonny and his accomplice, Sal Naturile (John Cazale), try to desperately remain in control, a media circus develops. The FBI will arrive to create an even more tense situation. Gradually, Sonny's surprising motivations behind the bank robbery are revealed. The standoff with law enforcement will move toward its inevitable end.
