The 1988 film "Rain Man", which was directed by Barry Levinson and starring Dustin Hoffman, Tom Cruise, Valeria Golino, and Gerald R. Molen, has Levinson making a cameo appearance. He plays a psychiatrist helping Cruise as Charles "Charlie" Babbitt determine if Hoffman (Raymond "Ray" Babbitt, an autistic savant and Charlie's elder brother) will want to remain with Charlie or be cared for at Walbrook, a residential home which supports adults with autism live various aspects of their lives.

"Rain Man" begins when self-centered hustler Charlie discovers he has an older brother, Raymond, an institutionalized autistic savant who has inherited all of their father’s $3m fortune. Charlie is bequeathed a 1949 Buick Roadmaster convertible. He decides to kidnap Raymond and the pair embark on a road trip. The pair will go on a cross-country journey in a Charlie's Buick.

"Rain Man" premiered at the 39th Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Golden Bear, the festival's highest prize. It was theatrically released by MGM/UA Communications Co. in the United States in December 1988. It obtained critical and commercial success, grossing $354.8 million, on a $25 million budget, becoming the highest-grossing film of 1988. It received a leading 8 nominations at the 61st Academy Awards, winning four (more than any other film nominated); Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (for Hoffman), and Best Original Screenplay.
