Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) is hired by store director Doris Walker (Maureen O'Hara) to play Santa Claus at Macy's flagship New York City store on 34th Street.

In the 1947 film "Miracle on 34th Street", when Santa Claus falls down drunk in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, reluctant store official Doris Walker offers the job to a bearded man named Kris Kringle (Gwenn won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in this role where he purported to be the real Santa). During the Christmas season, he will share a flat with Doris's neighbor (John Payne as Frederick M. "Fred" Gailey). Fred is a guy who has eyes for Doris. Kris hopes to unite the two while winning over Doris's skeptical 6-year-old daughter (Natalie Wood as Susan Walker).
