In which US state was Fort Laramie?

Fort Laramie (founded as Fort William and then known for a while as Fort John) was a significant 19th century trading post and diplomatic site located at the confluence of the Laramie River and the North Platte River in the upper Platte River Valley in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Wyoming.

It was founded in the 1830s to service the overland fur trade during the middle 19th century. It sat at the bottom of the long climb leading to the best and lowest crossing point at South Pass into western descending valleys and so was a primary stopping point on the Oregon Trail. Along with Bent's Fort on the Arkansas River, the trading post and its supporting industries and businesses were the most significant economic hub of commerce in the region.

Haven't seen the fort but did stay in the town of Laramie on a road trip. Like it. If the lottery is in my stars I would like to get a place there as well as another in inner part of Baja. Watch Elk and wildlife in Wyoming and whales birthing in Baja. Sweet life.....

Fort Laramie can be visited today. Not only was it the wintering point along the Oregon trail, it was the last stop for restocking supplies and getting your oxen/horses ready for the trip across the Continental Divide. Fort Laramie was the dividing point for the Oregon and Mormon Trails, serving as a rendezvous location for trappers, pioneers and Indians. Rendezvous means not only a meeting, but a safe gathering place for trade, sharing of information/gossip/etc., and friendly encounter. The above description about Ft. Laramie doesn't begin to tell the story. I recommend you do further investigation to learn about the barracks ("Bedlam"), some of the heroic wintertime stories both of cavalry and Pony Express riders, and the continued significance of this Fort in Goshen County, Wyoming. Also, find out how to pronounce the name "Laramie." Being a French name, pronunciation is not what you think! Near by the Fort is a sandstone cliff where you can see and read names (and dates) of pioneers who passed that way, true (and deep!) wagon ruts from the prairie schooners on their early second-year trip, and find the modern-day headquarters for the Wyoming Army National Guard.
