Satyajit Ray, the torch bearer of Indian/Bengali Cinema, has changed the world's perception of Indian movies.

Inspired by De Sica's 'Bicycle Thieves' he decided to shoot the entire film in natural surroundings. He is probably the first director to make a film outside the boundaries of studio.

His debut film 'Pather Panchali' (Song of the Road) is a 1955 Indian/Bengali-drama film, this film was produced by the Government of West Bengal. It is based on Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay's 1929 Bengali novel of the same name.

'Pather Panchali' was awarded the "Prix du document humain" prize at the 9th Cannes Film Festival in 1956, the movie also received 11 more international awards.
