The McCaughey septuplets were born on November 19, 1997 to Kenny and Bobbi McCaughey (pronounced 'McCoy') in Des Moines, Iowa.
Kenny, Alexis, Natalie, Kelsey, Nathan, Brandon and Joel McCaughey (listed in order of birth) arrived nine weeks prematurely by caesarean section all within six minutes.They are the world's first set of surviving septuplets.
Kenny and Bobbi McCaughey had one daughter, Mikayla, who was born in January 1996. While under treatment with an ovulation-stimulating treatment for infertility, Bobbi became pregnant with the seven babies. The McCaugheys declined 'selective reduction' to reduce the number of infants.
Two of the septuplets, Alexis and Nathan, have cerebral palsy. Both used walking assistive devices to get around. In November 2005, Nathan had spinal surgery in order to improve his walking abilities.
The septuplets graduated from high school in May 2016. Natalie, Kelsey, Nathan and Joel took up scholarships offered at the time of their birth by private Hannibal-LaGrange University in Hannibal, Missouri. Kenny and Alexis chose to stay in the Des Moines area and attend Des Moines Area Community College. Brandon enlisted in the United States Army.
