While filming the 1950 movie "Stromboli", director Roberto Rossellini had an affair with his star Ingrid Bergman (she was then married to Dr. Petter Lindström, 1949). In the same month the film was released, Bergman gave birth to a boy, Renato Roberto Ranaldo Giusto Giuseppe ("Robin") Rossellini (February 2, 1950). A week after their son was born, Bergman divorced Lindström and married Rossellini in Mexico. In June 1952, she gave birth to their twin daughters Isotta Ingrid Rossellini and Isabella Rossellini.

Roberto Rossellini (May 1906, Rome—June 1977, Rome) was one of the most widely known post-WWII motion-picture directors of Italy. His films "Roma città aperta" ("Rome, Open City", 1945), an Italian neorealist drama film and "Paisà" ("Paisan",1946), a follow-up to Rossellini's "Rome, Open City", focused international attention on the Italian Neorealist movement in films.

The son of a sculptor and architect, Rossellini travelled extensively throughout Europe. In 1931, his father’s fortune was confiscated by the Italian Fascist government. Three years later Rossellini began working odd jobs in the film industry. He directed a full-length feature, "La nave bianca" ("The White Ship", 1941), an Italian war film. Navy officials objected to its antiwar tone. His name was removed from the film; it was then released anonymously.

In his films, Rossellini’s technique of reconstructing actuality became well known. His realistic style greatly influenced others in the cinema.
