István Vágó (1949-2023) was best known as the host of 'Legyen ön is Milliomos!', the Hungarian version of 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?'. Vágó began hosting quiz shows in the 1970s, earning him the nickname 'The Quiz Professor'.
Vágó hosted 'Legyen ön is Milliomos!' (abbreviated as: 'Milliomos') between 2000 and 2008. 'Milliomos' is a television quiz game in which the contestants can win extremely high prizes if they correctly answers 15 consecutive multiple-choice questions. The main prize in Hungary was initially 25 million Hungarian Forint but later increased to 50 million (roughly $147,631). In most versions of the show, the top prize amount is one million units of the local currency, but this is highly dependent on the currency exchange rate and the rate of inflation.
'Milliomos' debuted on 29th February 2000 with Vágó as host. Vágó hosted other quiz shows during his career, including a Hungarian version of 'Jeopardy!'. He was the Hungarian commentator of the 'Eurovision Song Contest' between 1986 and 1996, and helped to present the competition when it was held in Hungary in 1997.
Vágó he announced his retirement as a television host in 2009. He passed away on 29th April 2023 at the age of 74.
