In a fair number of Hollywood movies, Jason Robords has received a number of Oscar nomination for playing essential characters in the films. He actually received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in two consecutive years. In All the President's Men (1976), he portrayed Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee. In Julia (1977), he was the writer Dashiell Hammett. Plus, he was nominated for another Academy Award for his role as Howard Hughes in Melvin and Howard (1980).

With the 1984 drama film, Sakharov, Robords never received an Oscar nomination. This was a TV biography directed by Jack Gold and written by David W. Rintels. Robords starred with Glenda Jackson, Nicol Williamson, Frank Finlay, Michael Bryant and Paul Freeman. This drama premiered on HBO in June 1984.

Here Robards played the famed Soviet nuclear physicist D. Andrei Sakharov. Sakharov was a man who obtained major honors from the Soviet government for his scientific achievements. Nonetheless he became an outspoken critic of Russia's human rights violations. So he was reclassified as a "non-person" and exiled to the cloistered city of Gorky.
