John Gielgud won his Oscar for the Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the 1981 film "Arthur". He portrayed the character of Hobson, the butler. He received the actual Oscar Award at the 54th Academy Awards in 1982.

It stars Dudley Moore as the eponymous Arthur Bach, a drunken New York City millionaire who is on the brink of an arranged marriage to a wealthy heiress. He ends up however falling for a common working-class girl from Queens, New York.

Besides the film "Arthur", he was able to appear in approximately 51 Hollywood movies starting with "Who is the Man?" (1924) and ending with "Catastrophe" (2000). During his professional career, he became one of the few people to win all four major annual American entertainment awards. They were an Oscar ("Arthur", 1981); an Emmy, ("Summer's Lease", 1991); a Grammy ("Ages of Man", 1979); and Tony Awards ("The Importance of Being Earnest", 1948; "Ages of Man", 1959; "Big Fish, Little Fish", 1961). He also won BAFTAs, ("Julius Caesar", 1953; "Murder on the Orient Express", 1975); Golden Globes, ("Arthur" and "War and Remembrance", 1988); and a Laurence Olivier Award (Special Award, 1985).

He died in May 2000, in Wotton Underwood, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, UK. He was 96; his doctor said he died "simply of old age".
