The film "Primary Colors" (1998) is an American comedy-drama; it was directed by Mike Nichols. The screenplay by Elaine May was adapted from the novel "Primary Colors: A Novel of Politics", a roman à clef about the Bill Clinton 1992 presidential campaign, which was originally published anonymously, but in 1996 was revealed to have been written by journalist Joe Klein. He had covered Clinton's campaign for 'Newsweek' magazine.

The film stars John Travolta, Emma Thompson, Billy Bob Thornton, Kathy Bates, Maura Tierney, Larry Hagman, and Adrian Lester. In a couple of negative reviews, comments were made that the film dragged and several of the performances (Travolta's for one) appear to be simple impersonations not actual acting; plus, the film lacked subtlety or depth, and "it was loaded with cheap/obvious jokes". Still, it was also noted that "solid support was provided by Tierney, Hagman, and Stacy Edwards".

The plot has the young and gifted Henry Burton (Lester) being tapped to oversee the presidential campaign of Governor Jack Stanton (Travolta). Burton is pulled into the politician's colorful world. He sees Jack's downfall as the man is contending with an ambitious wife, Susan (Thompson), and an outspoken adviser, Jemmons (Thornton).

Although it received critical acclaim, it was a box office bomb. In the end, Bates was still nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance, and May was nominated for an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.
