Julia Dent was the wife of Ulysses S. Grant, a US Army officer who became a famous Civil War general and later was elected President of the United States.

Julia Boggs Dent was born on January 26, 1826 near St. Louis, Missouri. Her parents were Frederick and Ellen Wrenshaw Dent. She was distantly related to Confederate general James Longstreet.

Julia was born with strabismus (more commonly known as "crossed eyes") which prevents both eyes from lining up in the same direction. After her husband became president, Julia considered surgery. Ulysses objected: “Did I not see you and fall in love with you with these same eyes? I like them just as they are, and now, remember, you are not to interfere with them.” Because her strabismus was never corrected, Julia almost always posed in profile for portraits.

After the Grants were married, Ulysses returned to the Army. As First Lady she was a champion of women's rights and refused to allow jokes about women to be told in her presence. She and President Grant had four children.

Grant was a two-term President who served from 1869 until 1877. As a general, Grant was commander of the combined Union armies and accepted the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Courthouse in 1865.
