Kinshasa is the capital city of which African country?
Kinshasa is the capital city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerly known as Zaire. It is the third largest city in Africa, after Lagos (Nigeria) and Cairo (Egypt), with a population of around 15 million. The city is located between the Congo river and Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of Congo. This makes Kinshasa and Brazzaville the second-nearest country capitals in the world after the Vatican City and Rome.
The city was founded by Henry Morton Stanley, a Welsh-American explorer, in 1881 under the name Léopoldville after King Léopold II of Belgium. Soon after, it became the first navigable port on the Congo River above Livingstone Falls. Léopoldville eventually changed its name to Kinshasa in 1966.
Like other cities close to the equator, Kinshasa has a dry and wet season. The dry season stretches from June to September, but the temperature does not differ much from the wet season.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo, commonly referred to as DR Congo, is a country in central Africa. It is the second-largest country in Africa by area and the eleventh-largest in the world. With a population of over 71 million, it is the nineteenth most populous nation in the world, as well as the most populous French-speaking country.
