Lancer, Lace, Lyric and Lark were the code names used by the Secret Service for what presidential family?
The Kennedy administration was often compared to Camelot. Hence Lancer, a reference to Lancelot, was chosen for JFK, when he became president. Jacqueline was named Lace, Caroline was Lyric and John, Jr. was Lark.
Starting with the Eisenhower administration, the president and direct family members were given code names that began with the same letter.
Although the Secret Service uses these code names, they are actually assigned by the White House Communications Agency. No explanation as to the origin or selection of these particular names has been given.
The use of code names was originally for security purposes and dates to a time when sensitive electronic communications were not routinely encrypted but currently the names simply serve for purposes of brevity, clarity, and tradition. According to established protocol, good code names are unambiguous words that can be easily pronounced.
