Rebecca is a novel by English author Daphne du Maurier. A best-seller, Rebecca sold 2,829,313 copies between its publication in 1938 and 1965, and the book has never gone out of print. The novel is remembered especially for the character Mrs. Danvers, the fictional estate Manderley, and its opening line, quoted in the question.

I've read this book and watched the movie several time! Never get tired of it! Wish TCM would show it again. It's been awhile! Never is the second wife's name mentioned to my knowledge! Great black and white film! Hope they never remake it especially in color!

The 1940 movie starred Joan Fontaine, Laurence Olivier and George Sanders among other greats. Worth watching again and again, and if you haven't read the book, you are missing pure poetry (especially the description of the laurels leading up to Manderlay). A good read for Valentine's Day!

Ken Follett wrote a WWII novel called "The Key to Rebecca," in which a German spy used that book as a cipher code. Follett's book also had a memorable opening line: "The last camel collapsed at noon."

I read it in 5th grade. When I returned it to the school library the librarian asked if I had read it. I told her I had. She was upset and asked where I had found it. Evidently it had been misshelved and should not have been available to me.
