"Hoodlum", a 1997 American crime drama film that gives a fictionalized account of the gang war between the Italian/Jewish mafia alliance and the black gangsters of Harlem, takes place in the late 1920s and early 1930s. This film concentrates on the individuals Ellsworth "Bumpy" Johnson (Laurence Fishburne), Dutch Schultz (Tim Roth), and Lucky Luciano (Andy García).

In the film, having just been released from jail, Bumpy Johnson (Fishburne) returns to his criminal ways as a linchpin in the African-American run numbers racket. However, Bumpy's longtime friend Illinois Gordon (Chi McBride) and girlfriend Francine Hughes (Vanessa Williams) are both eager to get him back on the straight and narrow. There are nonetheless other issues to consider; a brewing rivalry with Mafia boss Lucky Luciano (Garcia) and his henchman Dutch Schultz (Roth) threatens to raise the stakes to dangerous new levels.

"Hoodlum" received mixed reviews from critics. Audiences surveyed from over 930 cinema scoring agencies gave the film an approval rating of 88%. The film was called distressingly relevant.

A few critics noted that "this film has been marketed as a violent action picture, and in a sense, it is". The director Bill Duke has also made "a historical drama as much as a thriller, and his characters reflect a time when Harlem seemed poised on the brink of better things, and the despair of the postwar years was not then easily seen in a nice and prosperous Harlem."
