Leonard DiCaprio, acting since 1989, was nominated for an Oscar six times before he won for Best Actor. He won his first Oscar for the survival epic "The Revenant" (2015). He was named Best Actor at the 88th Academy Awards for his performance as Hugh Glass.

After being a six-time Oscar nominee (five for acting and one for producing), he won with his sixth attempt. His time had finally come. DiCaprio had been recognized by the Academy Awards for "What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?" (1993), nomination for Best Supporting Actor, "The Aviator" (2004), nomination for Best Actor, "Blood Diamond" (2006), nomination for Best Actor, "The Wolf of Wall Street" (2013), nominations as a producer for Best Picture and for Best Actor, and "The Revenant" (2015), nomination for Best Actor.

At the time, John Kerry, then the U.S. Secretary of State, wrote a short testimonial to DiCaprio which appeared in Time Magazine. Kerry stated, "DiCaprio's dedication drives him to succeed and that's how he takes himself back 200 years to create an Oscar-winning, bear-brawling, powerhouse performance in "The Revenant"."

DiCaprio's last nomination since he won in 2015 has come with the 92nd Academy Awards (2020). He got a Best Actor nomination for "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood". This resulted in a situation where he didn't win the Oscar.
