Algeria covers 919,595 square miles. Algeria is the tenth largest country in the world; and, it is the largest country in Africa and the Arab world. Around 90 percent of this nation is desert. Specifically, the Sahara desert covers over four-fifths of the land area in Algeria. However, Algeria is not alone.

Libya is also a country in North Africa 90 percent of which is desert. Libya is literally covered by the Sahara Desert. The only exception is the narrow 1200 mile coastline bordering the Mediterranean Sea, where almost 80% of its population resides.

Thus, when you look at Africa, it is obvious (self-evident) that these are the two nations in Africa are both about 90 percent desert.

Additionally, Algeria is an authoritarian regime. Its economy is largely based on hydrocarbons. It has the second largest reserves of oil on the African continent. Algeria also has the largest defense budget in Africa. Algeria is a member of the African Union, the Arab League, OPEC, the United Nations and is the founding member of the Maghreb Union.
