Located in Southern England, the massive work of art that is carved into the side of a hill is called the Uffington White Horse. It is one of England’s largest and best-known chalk figures ever to be viewed as a clever work of art. Experts believe the horse to be around 3,000 years old, but a recent geophysical survey has revealed that it is not the only ancient work of art in the area.

The survey showed the remains of a second stylized figure on a nearby hillside, which has subsequently been christened the Uffington White Duck. Standing at around 360 feet tall, it is believed that this figure may be the ancient symbol of a local tribe who venerated wild mallards.

Lynne Zeman, but originally just dug into the Chalk Downs . One was sadly defaced by Youths sliding down it so has now been fenced off and Painted White .

There are a few White Horses carved/dug into the Chalk Hills of Southern England . We use to live near two on the Chalk Downs where we used to walk with our Dog . One was near a Town called Westbury and one was near a Town called Calne in The County of Wiltshire . Also near us was Military Badges Carved/dug . I was always impressed with these when driving past . There is also another White Horse and Rider near Weymouth . Also is the Long Man of Wilmington famous for well use your imagination . It takes a lot of Volunteers to keep these figures clean and sharp (good for them I say) .I hope you all find this info helpful and can visit again soon . Just looked at a picture of it on google. Rather stylized and it said it was made by digging deep trenches that were filled with crushed white chalk. Quite an undertaking for the artist(s) 3000 years ago.
