Li'l Abner was a comic strip created by cartoonist Al Capp and featured a fictional clan of hillbillies in the impoverished mountain village of Dogpatch, USA and was the first comic strip to take place in the South.

Li'l Abner is a satirical American comic strip that had 60 million readers and appeared in over 900 American newspapers and 100 foreign papers in 28 countries. Written and drawn by Al Capp (1909–1979), the strip ran for 43 years from 1934 through 1977.

Li'l Abner was a series known for its colorful character names: Moonbeam McSwine, Stupefyin' Jones, Earthquake McGoon, Evil Eye Fleagle along with the main characters of Li'l Abner Yokum, Daisy Mae Yokum, Mammy and Pappy Yokum and others.

Hairless Joe and Lonesome Polecat were mostly known for brewing their concoction known as "Kickapoo Joy Juice". According to the strip "A moonshine elixir of such stupefying potency that the fumes alone have been known to melt the rivets off battleships". When a batch "needs more body," they simply went out and clubbed an animal, maybe even something like a moose, and tossed it in.
