The answer to this proverb assured us: marry in haste, repent at leisure. Simply put this means that if you marry someone without knowing him or her very well, you will later feel sorry (regret) that you got married in the first place. And, now with this piece of traditional wisdom, it is now supported by a 2010 study published in the U.S. Journal Personal Relationships by Professor Ted Huston. It shows that couples who rush into marriage really are more likely to split up.

Huston's research tracked the relationships of over 260 couples for over 14 years. It was found that those who had the shortest courtships were more likely to split up than those who had spent an extended period of time together before they got married.

Also, when several celebrity marriages were studied, almost all (22 out of 24) of the couples who had been together for more than ten years stated that their marriages would have been better if their courtships had been longer. In the end, the story is one where they met, married and got divorce. The report concluded that "courtships and marriages that are successful are the “best friend” ones, the ones that are slow and steady and unfold over a long period of time."
