McDonald's launched its first Indian restaurant in October 1996. Its restaurants in India do not serve beef nor pork products. Consuming beef is illegal in most states of India. McDonald's Indian version of the Big Mac burger is known as the Maharaja Mac and was originally made with lamb instead of beef; however, along with the company's other items, it is now made from chicken. In a further tribute to Indian culture, the name Maharaja Mac taps into associations with India's rich history of royalty as well as establishing the burger as a King amidst its fellow burgers.

Big Mac, McDonald's signature menu item, is arguably the most known burger in the world. The Big Mac burger is available at most of the restaurant locations across the globe except for India. Introduced in 2016, the Maharaja Mac, a burger which looks like Big Mac - double patties with three buns - but has no beef, and has every bit of similar feel to it.

It comprises a delicious chicken double patty, with rich sauce, jalapenos, tomatoes, onions, lettuce, and cheddar cheese. A vegetarian option is also available, substituting corn patties in the place of beef.

The entire idea and development process took a McDonald's team nine months before the product was finally launched.
