"Mebyon Kernow" is a political party in which part of the UK?
Meaning "Sons of Cornwall" in the Cornish language, "Mebyon Kernow" is a political movement that campaigns, ultimately, for the independence of England's most south-westerly county.
It was formed in the 1950s, and one of the original members was the world-famous novelist Daphne du Maurier, a Cornishwoman herself. It is not entirely unironic that the party campaigned against 2nd homes in Cornwall, and the influx of residents from the rest of England, but sites associated with du Maurier's own work, notably the real-life inspiration for "Manderley" in "Rebecca" were amongst the reasons that made the area so attractive to visitors in the first place!
During the 1980s, infighting led to a decline in membership and support for the party (and there is now a rival party, the Cornish Nationalist Party which, despite the name, does not campaign for independence as such) but its fortunes have revived.
The party combines promotion of the Cornish language and culture with practical politics; being of a centre left and social democratic leaning and in favour of membership of the EU.
