Mexico City, Mexico was founded on the ruins of which of the following ancient cities?
Mexico City is founded on the ruins of Tenochtitlan. At its peak, Tenochtitlan was the largest city in the pre-Columbian Americas. It served as the capital of the Aztec Empire, and is estimated to have been founded by the Aztec (also known as Mexica) people around 1325 C.E.
Tenochtitlan was built on an island in what was then Lake Texcoco in the Valley of Mexico. The city covered an estimated 8 to 13.5 km2 (3.1 to 5.2 sq mi), It was laid out symmetrically, had four sectors divided by four canals, and was connected to the mainland by bridges which could be pulled away if necessary. In the center of the city were the public buildings, palaces, and temples dedicated to the Aztec deities Huitzilopochtli, Tlaloc; and Quetzalcoatl, among other lesser gods.
Spanish conquistadors, aided by an alliance of Indigenous peoples, laid siege to the Aztec capital for 93 days, until the Mexica surrendered on August 13, 1521. A large portion of Tenochtitlan was destroyed in the fighting; much of the remainder was looted, burned, or destroyed after the surrender.
The leader of the conquistadors, Hernan Cortés, began the construction of what is now known as Mexico City among the ruins. Lake Texcoco was ultimately drained, and today much of Mexico City rests in the lake basin.
* The exact date of the founding of the city is unclear. The date 13 March 1325 was chosen in 1925 to celebrate the 600th anniversary of the city.
