Mom hamsters might eat their own babies when they are touched

Hamster pregnancy will last for 16 days. Mostly, a mother hamster will have 4 to 8 babies at a time. If you touch the baby hamsters, their mother might kill them! They should not be touched until they are 4 weeks old. If you touch them, they will smell like your hand and the mother will be confused.

Rats will do the same. I used to have rats when I was a kid. When we bred them we also had to separate the father from the mother and her babies

Might as well don't bother them after birth to avoid confusion on the mother. This are animals that do not have sense of right and wrong.
