Mother pandas only care for one of their cubs, and allow the others to die.
Some animal mothers abandon offspring in favor of a single child. Pandas almost always have twins, but abandon one twin to the wild. A panda mom makes her selection based on strength, choosing the child she believes has the better chance of survival.

Was happier not knowing this fact! Sorry if you think this is a wrong attitude but it is my true feeling.

I knew this one, and I am grateful my mother was not a Panda mom even though I had only one child.

JRW, You are correct that the mama cannot produce enough milk or two babies. Unfortunately, that is the cycle of life.

Jon Woolery, When the mama panda is sleeping we take one of them and bottlefeed. The next time mama is sleeping they switch the two babies so the one baby is now back with mommy having mommy‘s milk and the other one is with a caretaker getting bottle fed. This process happens for a few months. Also other conservationists, sanctuaries, and zoos do the exact same thing around the world. There are many YouTube videos on it.

Animals are very different from humans so peter dunkelberger don't wish death on those animals wish it on humans who do that to their children

Does the staff at China's Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base offer assistance to the ones tossed aside?

I have often thought that the attention showered on Pandas is undeserved. I believe that they should have died out long ago due to their having only one birth child and that child survives birth with great difficulty--the mother sometimes ignores the kid. It is only because of the anthropomorphism that the bears have been supported so strongly and therefore survived.

Some human mothers exhibit similar behaviors. No judgement but just saying.

It is not that mummy panda thinks "I can't manage 2 kids". Rather, it is necessary for survival, as they don't have sufficient milk or energy to care for two so focus their attentions on the stronger cub.

janellebiggs, I remember many years ago in the NT (Australia) the local hospital went to great lengths to prevent a woman from killing one of her twins due to tribal beliefs.
