This is the flag of Canada used from 1957 to 1965: you can see the tiny maple leaves, which provide a clue. The Canadian Red Ensign had been unofficially used since the 1890s and was approved by a 1945 Order in Council for use "wherever place or occasion may make it desirable to fly a distinctive Canadian flag". The Royal Union Flag remains an official flag in Canada. The modern flag with a single maple leaf has been in use since 1965.

This is absolute bullshit!! If it was 1965 or before, this would be easy knowledge. And for that matter, how about the Canadian flag before this one? This is why we participants get irritated with questions like this!

Charles Chuck Hazard The question is straightforward. It in no way suggests that it is a flag currently in use. There simply is no other country this flag could be associated with. Your own inference was your downfall. If they showed a flag with 13 alternating red and white stripes and a blue canton with 13 stars forming a circle, I bet you would have had no trouble answering even though that flag is a thing of the past.
