However, tradition has it that the three wise men who came to seek and honor the infant Jesus were named Gaspar, Balthasar, and Melchior.

The three wise men, known as magi, were men belonging to various educated classes. The English word magician comes from this same root. But these wise men were not magicians in the modern sense of sleight-of-hand performers. They were of noble birth, educated, wealthy, and influential. They were philosophers, the counselors of rulers, learned in all the wisdom of the ancient East. The wise men who came seeking the Christ child were not idolaters; they were upright men of integrity.

The tradition that there were three wise men arose from the fact that the Bible mentions three gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh according to Matthew 2:11. The Bible doesn’t say how many wise men made the journey to see the baby Jesus.

The answer is correct. The scriptures don't specify an exact number of magi. It is generally believed Jesus was about two when they visited, as he was referred to as a child, and they visited him in a house.

Elizabeth Mayfield, You don't have to be a Bible scholar to read the Bible. Scripture tells you there were three gifts, and it tells you there was more than one wise man from the east. It does not specify the number of men who made the visit.

Larry Jones, Correct! The wording used when the shepherds visited was "infant", and the wording used when the Magi came was "child". Also, this is the reason Herod had all children two and younger slaughtered.
