The College of William & Mary, founded in 1693 and Dartmouth College, founded in 1769 are the two institutions still known by their original names.

The Colonial Colleges were all chartered as colleges prior to the American Revolution. Seven of the nine are in the Ivy League (Rutgers University and College of William & Mary are not). Also all but one institution is north of the Mason-Dixon Line (College of William & Mary is in Virginia).

The College of William & Mary is the second oldest institution of higher education in the U.S. after Harvard University and boasts three U.S. Presidents as alumni, four if George Washington's surveyor license would count as a degree.

Dartmouth College, the youngest of the nine, has had numerous members of Congress, state governors, three Nobel laureates and one U.S. Vice-President as alumni.

The other institutions were:

New College, became Harvard University, chartered in 1650.

Collegiate School became Yale University, charted in 1701.

College of New Jersey became Princeton University, charted in 1746.

King's College became Columbia University, charted in 1754.

College of Philadelphia became University of Pennsylvania, charted in 1755.

College of Rhode Island became Brown University, charted in 1764.

Queen's College became Rutgers University, charted in 1766.
