With each opening of the 49 episodes, the introduction to the ABC TV show ("The Outer Limits") includes the following narration: "There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling ... we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat: there is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to – The Outer Limits."

This science Fiction anthology show was created by Leslie Stevens and produced by Joseph Stefano. It had an avant garde tone and ran for 2 seasons between September 1963 and January 1965. It was seen as a worthy competitor to the very popular and well watched "The Twilight Zone" (1959).

It featured some truly brilliant writing by the likes of Stefano, Robert Towne, Anthony Lawrence and Meyer Dolinsky. Plus an excellent selling point was its 'Monsters of the Week' format. Other special effects also helped; they were all the more impressive after being created on a TV schedule and budget.

Additionally, the original title for the show was “Please Stand By”. However, due to heightened tensions in America with the Cuban Missile Crisis, the network felt that the initial title might cause panic if the words (Please Stand By) appeared on the screen to start the show.
