In the show, Colonel Potter is a regular Army man. He is passionate about horses, and keeps an old U.S. Cavalry issue McClellan saddle in his office. This item is later put to use when he acquires a horse. It is given to him by Radar for his wedding anniversary. B.J. and Hawkeye were unable to catch it. The horse will remain with Col. Potter until the very end of the series. Initially it was referred to as a colt. Col. Potter says, "He can't be more than four years old" in its first appearance. It is thereafter named "Sophie" and referred to as a mare. Potter grows to truly love this horse.

This is the show where all the main characters say their last 'goodbye'. When it is time for the colonel to leave, Colonel Potter rides out of camp one last time on his beloved horse, Sophie.
